Mounjaro – Once-Weekly Dual GIP/GLP-1 Receptor Agonist Injection
Mounjaro is the pioneering once-weekly injectable prescription medicine from Eli Lilly, containing tirzepatide, the first and only approved dual agonist of glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptors. This innovative 39-amino-acid modified peptide (with Aib substitutions, C-terminal amide, and C20 fatty diacid acylation for extended half-life) delivers powerful glycemic control while supporting meaningful weight reduction in clinical studies—making it a cornerstone therapy for adults and children 10 years and older with type 2 diabetes.
Administered subcutaneously via a convenient pre-filled single-dose pen, Mounjaro works by enhancing insulin secretion in a glucose-dependent manner, reducing glucagon levels, slowing gastric emptying, and promoting satiety to help manage blood sugar effectively when used alongside diet and exercise.
Key Benefits & Clinical Effects:
- Superior A1C Reduction — Proven to significantly lower HbA1c levels (often superior to other incretin therapies in head-to-head trials) for better long-term glycemic control in type 2 diabetes.
- Substantial Weight Loss Support — Drives notable body weight reduction (frequently 15–20%+ in many patients over extended periods) through appetite suppression, reduced food intake, and improved metabolic efficiency—beyond typical diabetes management.
- Glucose-Dependent Action — Stimulates first- and second-phase insulin release while suppressing inappropriate glucagon, minimizing hypoglycemia risk when not combined with insulin or sulfonylureas.
- Cardiometabolic Advantages — Supports improvements in lipid profiles, blood pressure, and overall metabolic health in relevant studies.
- Convenient Once-Weekly Dosing — Flexible administration any time of day, with or without meals, in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm.
Product Highlights:
- Available in pre-filled, single-dose or pen formats with strengths of 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 7.5 mg, 10 mg, 12.5 mg, or 15 mg per 0.5 mL
- Clear, colorless to slightly yellow, sterile, preservative-free solution
- Starting dose typically 2.5 mg once weekly, titrated in 2.5 mg increments (after ≥4 weeks) up to a maximum of 15 mg weekly for individualized control
- Ready-to-use—no reconstitution required
